- Design Creation: The first step in screen printing is creating or preparing the design that will be printed. This can be done digitally using graphic design software or by hand-drawing the design on a transparent film called a "positive".
- Screen Preparation: A screen made of fine mesh fabric, typically made of polyester or nylon, is stretched tightly over a frame. The frame can be made of wood or aluminum. Then, the screen is coated with a light-sensitive emulsion.
- Exposure: The positive design is placed on top of the coated screen, and both are exposed to a bright light source. The light hardens the emulsion except where the design blocks it. This creates a stencil on the screen.
- Washing Out: After exposure, the screen is washed with water, which removes the unhardened emulsion, leaving behind open areas that correspond to the design.
- Ink Application: The screen is mounted onto a printing press or a wooden frame. The surface to be printed on is placed underneath the screen, and ink is poured onto the top edge of the screen. A squeegee is then used to pull the ink across the screen, forcing it through the open areas and onto the printing surface below.
- Printing Process: The squeegee is moved along the screen with firm pressure, ensuring even coverage of the ink. This process is repeated for each color in the design, with separate screens created for each color.
- Curing: Once the printing is complete, the printed item needs to be dried and cured to set the ink permanently. This can be achieved through air drying or by using heat, depending on the type of ink being used.
